Forming Type with Cut-outs

 For this lesson, we were tasked with designing a character of type with cut-out illustrations or shapes. To link with my ongoing project, I chose to use imagery of apples, leaves and branches. I used the 'S' in the logo of the Somerset Cider Brandy Company as my shape.

To begin I folded a piece of paper and cut out the shapes I required, cutting two sides at once. Once cut, I began assembling the design creating clusters of the apples and leaves where the stroke of the line was thickest. In between these elements I used branches as connecters, giving contrast and realism to the tree design. Once assembled, photographs were taken with a bright spot light placed across the pattern to give darker shadows. This is an interesting and effective method of forming type and combining illustration.

To gain inspiration for my booklet designs, I looked at examples of booklets with interesting features creating a mood board of images: The first three of designs use a selective 2 or 3 colour palette. By limiting colour continuity can be achieved and an understated visual appeal. These designs also feature large titles that span almost an entire page, which, in the case of my booklet, would allow me to display the typefaces clearly to the reader. The fourth image uses diagonal text boxes and titles that follow a perpendicular pattern. By rotating the text interest can be added, but it is important not to repeat it too often as it could become a gimmick. A few of the examples use black type over just a plain white page, limited the text to smaller segments, thus, using the white space to make the design minimalist. Design development using research and existing design

Using my previous design alongside my booklet design research, I decided to expand on my grid design with more interesting features. Front Page: Keeping the overall design the same, I chose to put the 'TYPE' feature on a 25 degree angle with the grey box following the same line. Page 2 and 3: I wanted to use the contents and introduction pages to be more creative with the design as they have less content on each page. Using some of my inspiration, I made the contents page numbers oversized and mixed the fonts using the specified typefaces. I again wanted to put both pages on an angle making sure they both follow the same -25 degrees. I rearranged the original introduction page with the R design elements set in a perpendicular line to the angle of the body copy.
