Initial Design Development
To continue my initial design development, I began creating more detailed thumbnails. These designs focus on the tree of Burrow Hill or an apple tree and the roots beneath. The first is purely the tree and a cross section of the ground below showing the roots beneath. The roots are fine and can twist around the text on the box, incorporating it more into the illustration. By placing the brand inside the roots of the tree, it forms connotations of the brand being rooted in nature and Somerset, portraying their pride of being awarded Protected National Status, the only brand in the EU and UK allowed to use the term 'Cider Brandy' and the importance of the source being Somerset. The second design is very similar, except the roots are in the form of the copper distillery equipment and piping. Not only does this keep the same connotations as the previous, it also features their traditional equipment, another nod to the 300 year old history of the brand. To highlight the copper, a foil spot finish can be applied to the box to give a higher quality finish.
The current Somerset Cider Brandy Company logo features a tree, often foiled in gold on the packaging. Using this design, I applied it to a segmented apple, with the roots of the tree spreading into the flesh of the apple. This would be an interesting method of combining their logo and the apple element of the product. However, for a consumer, perhaps the meaning would be lost and the combination too far-fetched. The next design uses a more simplified design, a branch of apple hanging over a barrel of cider. As the box is tall, this would allow for a story to follow down the box, with the branch at the top and the barrel at the base. Between these elements the type and the falling apple can be featured. This design could seem quite dated with no modern interpretation to attract a younger market.
The final two designs are a more realistic interpretation. The first is a sketch of an orchard ladder into the branches of the apple tree. Again, this would appeal to the height of the box, as the ladder can span the length of the box. The ladder could be highlighted with a spot foil to give a modern finish to the box. The second sketch is of a single apple blossom. This element could be applied as a pattern to fill the box in a modern bright floral design. Or could be enlarged or oversized to fill the box with the delicate gradient of the petals sitting behind the type. From here, I will begin developing the designs using a variety of mediums and continue experimenting with imagery to reflect the brand.
