Roughs of Initial Designs

Taking forward the 'root' concept from my initial designs ideas, I drew more detailed roughs to evaluate the effectiveness of the designs.

This first design is a neater version of the previous thumbnail, outlined in black to give a sharp stroke around the pipes. This design combines the traditional imagery of the tree and Somerset setting with a more steampunk or mechanical theme with the copper still piping. It provides an interesting interpretation of the roots of the tree with the Cider carried directly from the essence of the tree. Above ground the tree, grass and sky can be bright and blue to provide a positive summer setting. To contrast, the underground background would be a dark brown to imitate dirt offsetting the bright copper foil of the pipes.

This design links well with the brand, however, revealing this design to a potential consumer, they did not understand the imagery without in depth knowledge of the brand. Therefore, this design may not be effective as advertising for the brand and product.

This design combines the apple from the initial design ideas and the mechanical piping root design from the previous. Using the corner of the box, the apple could be cross-sectioned, one half the outside and the other the interior of the apple (As shown in the thumbnail above the design).

To illustrate this design more effectively, I rendered it in colouring pencils to show the different perspectives. The inner view features the core/heart of the apple with the rest of the apple hollow to highlight the piping. Rather than using the piping to represent the cider still, in this case it is designed as the interior of a barrel with the exit of the pipe a tap. Again, this suggests the purity of their product and the direct source being the natural apples. It also provides the modern design and feel, tapping into the more scientific trend of x-ray imagery with magnified subjects.

This design is perhaps easier understood, as the tap takes liquid straight from the apple. However, the pipe work could still be lost on a consumer. The large surface area of the apple skin provides space for bright/bold colour and interesting texture in the design, which can be developed further.
